A lovely episode... with Ghulam ali saab!!i just wish they had made it theme based-- on ghazals!!!
next point...its very very unfair to have a single winner, esp in this age group..where the boys voices are nowhere near the adult pitchand the girls have already reached that stage...
having got this off my chest..let me write abt todays episode...
group song..jame raho from taare zameen par!!!
abeer startedof with deewana...very frankly i didnt like it one bit..the low notes were awful.i thot, i may b wrong!!time for him to make an exit!!!
anwesha with shubha mudgals dere dere...was flawless as usual...!!
prakriti with ashajis jaanam samjha karo..slipped in quite a few places...but hers is a voice to watch out for.after a lot of training...not for this show!!!
Areeb..with teri deewani was a major disappointment...i have been saying from my first post that he is one of my fav top 5...he still is...but, hes slipping badly.too much pressure on him probably...his voice is at a very nazook stage...another 4 yrs...and he may just top..his classical base training is very good..!!!he was royally fried by the judges today...kunal ripped him apart!!
aishwarya was the star today!!!her rendition of aaj jaane ki zidd na karo...brought tears to my eyes!!!very touching...dil ko choo liya!!!
vyom was another surprise package...his channa ve was so effortless and practically flawless!...i was impressed..and so was kunal ...and shreya actually wanted to dance...!!the kids, abhaas were so thrilled wen she came up on stage and danced.it was very cute!!!
soniya...also was superb with piya re!!!her voice is to die for, anyday!!!!ghulam ali saab asked for an encore which speaks volumes abt her talent!! shreya for the first time said she was deewani abt her voice...!!!am glad...
jayant sang a ghazal[obviously!!!]..aawaragi..he was very very good...khan saab was very impressed!!..
the show ended with ghulam ali saab singing chupke chupke....brought back my teenage yrs!! ty...gajendra singh for this episode!!
cheers!!!

Beautiful episode!!!

I love soniya's voice. She has a unique voice and i am sure she'll create her own platform someday.

Really liked Aishwariya's performance. Fabulous!!! She is very versatile.

Todays episode i liked only Soniya, Aishwariya , Anwesha and Jayant.

Last week i made sure that i vote for Anwesha online. She is a real talent. I feel the finalist will be Soniya, Aishwariya and Anwesha.

Areeb has a wonderful voice but looks like he is not paying much attention, he looks khoya khoya sometimes.

Great episode!!!Loved it!!!

great nikkie..it was a very good episode!!!the talent in this show is amazing..!!!hope, they can retain anwesha, soniya and aishwarya to the final 3!!!wish there is no wild card entry too...!!!

Just one word can describe Jayant's performance i.e "Outstanding". Jayant is simply outstanding, I could not stop myself from voting for him yesterday. He has already a great Ghazal singer. I sincerely want Jayant to win this competition.

jatin said...

For the first time yesterday I enjoyed Chotte ustaad more than little champs. Infact I watched Chotte Ustaad only. Yesterday VOI was back to its original form.

But 1 thing i will like to say Jayant idolizes Ghulam Ali, but our Indian ghazal singers:- Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas are much better compared to him. He should try learning from them.

Antar,

I am eagerly awaiting your new blog Little champs vs chotte ustaad.

the surprise is soniya ,at her age!!!
i just adore her voice...i like husky and diff voices like hers, ila arun, usha uthup, reshma, abeeda parveen, bhimsen joshi, gangubai hangal, MD ramanathan,mukesh..to name a few...they ahve scored big bcoz inspite of not having so called typical voices...they have managed to make their voice melodious to our ears....bcoz of talent and sheer hard work...!!!hats off to them...!!

like i prefer daler mehndi to his brother mika...mikas voice is so pheeka!!!

But the fact is that at present date Mika is more popular than Daler Mehendi. Mika is more popular among the younger generation.

Long post alert!!!
Well well well, you leave for a little while and its a new landscape out her in the blogging land :)
I am sad that Saturday is gone. That's the day I wait for cause I get to hear voices of a few genuine talents!
Irrespective of what everyone says, I still think that Dere Dere kicked some serious butt. I heard that song after such a long time and then went on to hear Anwesha's rendition three or four times. Heard Shubha Mudgal's rendition too and finally had to agree with Pritam's comments!!!!
Anwesha did give a new definition to that song. The clarity of her voice, her notes. The textures in her high pitch rendition brought tears to my eyes. She's a find. Gajji, tussi great ho! Aapney ek Lataji jaisa talent dhoondh nikala
Contrary to popular opinion, I did not like Soniya's rendition of Piya re as much. Now I am not saying that it was not good, just that my expectations from anyone singing that song are really really high thanks to the timeless Nusrat and then a very deserving second by our own Toshi. So I guessed it paled in comparison although she's really young (allegedly) to have tried that song
Regarding Aish's rendition of Aaj jaaney ki zid na karo, it was awesome, no doubt, but I felt that Ghulam Ali saahab commented on the 'saat taal' composition cause Aish was sometimes going slightly wayward. If you wanna experience what I am saying, listen to her rendition again.
Abeer and Areeb were both atrocious. Deewana by Sonu and Teri Diwani by Kailash are gems underlined by some outstanding singing. These kids did not even come close to the original. Toshi and Raja had sung really good versions of these songs in the last versions of SVOI and SRGMP.
Channa Ve was great! If anyone has improved as the programme progresses, its Vyom. He's not chup-chup anymore, opens his mouth while singing and is maturing day-by-day.
Overall, SVOI kids are heads and shoulders above any other talent hunt contest. SRGMP is ailing due to lack of good singers, all they have in the same calibre are Aamir and Rohanpreet. Aamir is inconsistent and Rohan good with regional songs only.
More about other threads later....

Regarding Abhas.....as the anchor for SVOI Chhote Ustad and his comparison with Adi the great, the host of SRGMP, here're my personal comments and biases.
I will start with this, I am biased towards Abhas. I think he is a phenomenal singer who will blossom like Sonu did. He's versatile, trained and has the talent to become a great singer. Remember, he's all of 18 right now!!!
Having said that, I also agree that Adi is a showman. He has immense screen presence, boyish charm, has inhereted Udit's soft nasal voice and does much better as a show host but my point is, isn't it unfair to compare the two.
Adi has, literally, grown with people like Bhappi Lahiri, Abhijeet, Sonu and Suresh Wadekar etc around him. He was a child artist, has sung with Asha ji, does overseas shows and is totally comfortable with the camera.
Abhas on the other hand is 'raw' and is doing it for the first time but still has managed to capture what Adi has perhaps ignored - a proximity and closeness to the kids.
When kids are in scary land he holds there hand, when they get eliminated, they hug him and cry, perhaps because they consider him one of their own. He laughs with them and cries with them.
He always has a good word to put in for the kids, no matter what and its my contention that he's a much better singer than Aditya!!!
That's why even though I think that Adi is damn good, Abhas is better just cause he's so much more human and kid like.......maybe 'cause he is a kid!

It seems that "Chhote Ustaad' is gaining in terms of viewership if number of messages on this blog are any indication.

Friday episode- Vyom, Abeer, Jayant and Mansi were in "Scary land". On the basis of just these performances (ignoring the past ones), I strongly feel that Areeb should have been shown the exit door. Mansi, who was given a tough song for her age, sang it much better than what anyone else of her age could have sung. Areeb's voice, on the other hand, was too 'husky' and he was almost inaudible at lower notes. He also seemed to be in (?) hurry and cut many modulations in between to land at the landing note, which again was inaudible. The song demanded a full-throated voice whereas he was too 'husky'.

Regarding Saturday episode- much has been written here, and I mostly agree with what bloggers have already written. So, I would not repeat all that.

I think it was cheap on the part of Kunal Ganjawala to offer payment to Ghulam Ali saab for training Jayant. The answer from Ghulam Ali was expected. What he could have said publically? If Kunal wanted to help him he should have done it silently or asked Ghulam Ali saab privately and when Ali saab agreed then he should have announced in the programme. But, he or Gajji(?) preferred to show the viewers that on their initiative only Ghulam Ali saab took him as a student. Cheap.. Cheap.. Cheap.!! If your right hand does something 'good' for somebody then even your left hand should not know it.

And, finally about Ustaad Ghulam Ali saab's "Chupke Chupke". Though I am nobody in front of him- but still he was no way near to himself while singing that ghazal. I know it would be considered equivalent to 'blasphemy' if I criticised him. But sorry, I was not impressed. Our Jagjit Singh, who is elder to Ghulam Ali saab handles the notes so beautifully and then there is absolutely no match in voice quality and the depth. The live performances of Jagjit are much much better than Ghulam Ali saab. And please for heavens sake- don't put Pankaj Udhaas in the same league with Jagjit Singh saab.

nothing blasphemous if u feel u ahve criticised...every body has their opinion....and thats how it works in a democracy ..incl our blog!!! i loved ghulam ali wen i was young...and i still do!!!very frankly...after being a music nut wen i was young...i was literally off music for a decade...so..i am no expert on anything...just give my long winded opinion after my revived interest in music..!!!since the blog idea was ours.....had to write to keep it running....!!!sau gun maaf...if i bored u guys with my looooong posts!!

Rishi,

I cannot agree with more with you on superiority of Jagjeet Singh compared to Ghulam Ali and Pankaj Udhas. But see when Jagjit Singh came in Voice of India, he was treated quite shabbily, but ghulam Ali was given so much respect. We Indians refuse to acknowledge the talent of our own artists where as give undue praise to Pakistani artists.

Hard said...

Its futile to compare. Both of them have their own unique style. Jaggu's voice is out of this world but all his music is rythm based and becomes monotonous after a while. Ghulam Ali is a wizard when it come to his mastery of 'sur'. He has created his own style of singing. His style resembles Mehdi Hassan's a lot who happens to be another great ghazal singer.
As regards to India or Pakistan, I think music transcends all the boundaries and has no caste, race or color. We should steer clear of all that discussion.
I remember Javed Akhtar's words...
Ishwar, Allah terey jahaan mein nafrat kyoon hai jung hai kyoon, tera dil to itna bada hai insaan ka dil tang hai kyoon...

Rishi said...

@ Hard

I am sorry, it seems you misunderstood me. What I said about Ghulam Ali saab was only for what he sang on that particular day. His voice (on that day) was not the usual self, and yes, he has excellent knowledge of the surs but now his throat / cords are not matching his skills. It was NOT a general comment on his singing. Many of his recent performances have been just average as per his skills.

I am feeling still floored by Aishwarya's Gazal...Aaj Jaane Ki zeed Na Karo.

I clear cut divide has already been formed between tons of talents of the Girl squad and squeeky voiced Boys's brigade.

I am however afraid that Nepali Factor may play a very dangerous role in the coming weeks.
We may have to see exit of Aishwarya and also Sonya earlier if Nepalis start voting to see Prakriti win.
There can be a repeat of Indian Idol results.

There is much more I would like to discuss but I am short of time.
Would post again in a couple of days.

By the way, Why internet voting closed till 19th?

Folks,
I have been reading posts here which allude to Aish or Anwesha getting eliminated earlier than some of the less talented participants. I think that as long as the scary land can have 4 participant, Aish and Anwesha will be safe. Its only when the number of scary land participants reduces to 2 and both of them are in scary land does that situation arise. Here're a few scenarios (worst case) when there are 4 participants in scary land
Scenario 1:
Aish, Anwesha, Sonia and Jayant all are in scary land
Scenario 2:
Aish, Anwesha, Sonia/Jayant and one more participant, who is not Sonia/Jayant, are in scary land
Scenario 3:
Aish, Anwesha, Sonia and two more participants, none of who is Sonia or Jayant are in scary land

Out of the above three scenarios, only scenario 1 'will' result in a good participant getting eliminated. Even then it will not be Aish or Anwesha. I firmly believe that judges will not eliminate any of these supremely talented girls.
So we should all chill out till we get to the final four (Chahetey Chaar :)

hi all

was out for the weekend. nice job kalyani.

It was a nice show. But I fail to understand, why not all the singer sang ghazal, when ghulam ali was there. It could have been a better show. May be some of the kinds cant sing ghazal.

abeer- cute performer with not so strong sur expertise. but at his age, its quite gr8.

anwesha-I wonder why anwesha did not sang ghazal. Just like aishwarya did, she could have show it to world, ghazal is not only Jayant's genre. Though she sang quite well. But I am still in the magic with her last week performance. thats why this performance did not touched my heart. In saregamapa, mauli sang maiya maiya so well, that everyone expected similar performance in her later performances, which she could not met. I hope anwesha will keep on giving good performance. For her it will be quite tough to be in the competition. Reason- Bongs only talks a lot, dont vote.

pakriti- sizzling voice but lots of problem in sur. But dont worry, Nepal regiment will make you win the title. Just ask them, start voting now itself, if you are in scary land, it will be tough for you to be in the competition.

Areeb- expected quite a lot from him in this episode. May be expectation pressure has brought down his performance. But we should not compare him with toshi/ raja hasan. They are matured singer & areeb is still in his teens. This is quite a tough song with lots of variation. Folks try it once to sing the song, its really tough.

aishwarya- its really hard to believe that she have heard her mom singing before her birth (abhimanyu) and may be in some of the infant stage. and she sang it in such stage without listening to the original singer. Thats apart- it was a mind blowing performance. Nice soft voice. Ghulam ali also admit its a tough song in context of taal. Till this episode, it would be great if we see anwesha & aishwarya in the grand final.

Vyom- sang nicely. expression has also improved. Its good to listen a non-rafi song from him. love to see guys improving. Otherwise its all girls competition.

Soniya- another good performance. nice variation in her voice. Improving day by day. May not be perfect. but she can be easily placed in the 3rd position. Please dont go for sympathy votes (mother's illness)

Jayant-Nicely sang. Though I expected him to perform him more nicely. Ghulam Ali also made a vague remarks. Judge's remarks shows sympathy only.
Still the AV continued. All the kids touches Ghulam ali's feet when he first enter the stage. But Jayant has to touch his feet separately. Compared with Eklavya. (2nd joke of the day, after aishwarya's comparison with abhimanyu). I hope gajji efforts to safeguard jayant succeed. In none of the competition, any directors has done such a favor for any participant. Sing well, India will shower the sympathy vote.

Performance wise, till now, I dont see any guys in the top 3. even paktiti is better than the guys.

1-2 anwesha/aishwarya
3 soniya
4 pakriti
5 jayant
6 areeb
7-8 vyom/abeer

Its my personal choice, people may differ with me

amit said...

@hard

i know judges loves anwesha/ aishwarya. but dont u think judges are mere puppet in the hands of gajji? if any contestent keeps on coming in scaryland, i.e., he/she brings less sms/call to svoi, gajji will kick him/her out.

singingwise gitasri was not that bad when compared to anwesha/ aish. but when she keeps on coming in scaryland, gajji trick comes into the picture. give her less popular song as compared to others.

be prepared for all the eventualities. after watching all the sms oriented competitions i have become so pessimist abt results.

now my view just enjoy the best performances n be ready worst results.

Hi Guys!!

The idea of coming up with this blog was a joint one by we three, as we had a bitter experience in the earlier blog where the so-called administrator did nothing to filter / delete the obnoxious / insulting messages. We are thankful that our efforts are being acknowledged here in terms of number of messages but sometimes we feel a bit embarassed when our esteemed bloggers thank us. This blog was opened just to share our views with others about the programme. So we appeal that instead of thanking us, please send us loads of your views about this programme and music in general. There should be no thanking between friends. Kalyani also seems to be thoroughly embarassed and sometimes wonders whether she should be just a moderator and be silent or she should put in her pennys worth.

Hard said...

Maybe I am one of those rare breeds who still believes in GajJi. After all he is the one who has given us SaReGaMa and now SVOI and alongwith it singers like Sonu, Kunal, Shreya, Sanjeevani etc. I still respect him a lot and would not easily subscribe to the view that he has sold his soul to the SMS drama.
I do agree with an earlier post where the blogger mentioned that it should be either a talent search or a reality show, it cannot be both. Like SVOI if in Chhote Ustaad anyone else apart from Anwesha or Aish wins, it will be a disaster and I have to concede that with angle of SMS involved, it is really possible.
Having said that, hope is all we have got and we should stick to it till Anwesha and Aish are in the competition.

Amit, I have a request for you. Please, please do not compare Mauli and Anwesha :) Its a disgrace for a complete singer like Anwesha to be compared to Mouli, who could, literally, sing just one genre of songs. She was perhaps one of the worst in SRGMP 07, IMHO.

amit said...

@hard

I am sorry, if I conveyed wrong message. What I meant to say that people will start comparing the best performance with the next one. Anwesha has sang the song AAMI JE TOMAR in such a beautiful manner that people will definitely compare her next performance with that one & will say "you can do better".

Regarding mauli, she was one of the contestant whom I dont like. her singing sucks. but she was the most talk abt person in the show. Her Maiya Maiya surpasses all her other performance.

Regarding Gajji, I have full praise for him. The names which you have mentioned are pre-sms era guys, who are selected by the renowned judges. (not by sms). Now I think he has become more commercial now.

Is anyone following K for Kishore. howz it going.

Kalyani said...

i think its time they stopped with sms ,online voting and blah.
the first show ..with good judges was meri awaz suno on doordarshan in 1996..where we had sunidhi chauhan and pradip somasundaram as winners!!we can rightly point out that it was a talent show...
zee did start with antakshari and sa re ga ma...and they had been highly successful...
but for me, memories of meri awaz sunotake precedence over the other shows...
once gajendra singh...came up with his brilliant idea of converting saregama...into sa re ga ma pa with sms voting and blah...it bcame a reality show and no more cud b called a talent show....i may b wrong!!!

one thing the present show scores over the prev edition of the show is in the costumes!!the kids ahve been clothed in sober and cute costumes...pleasing to the eye!!unlike the prev edition where the costumes were loud and garish!!
