well,a very emotional 90 mins[just recovered from the deluge of tears!!!].some good performances..let me list them out...!!
first, nikkie this is 4 u..the judges looked spruced up...shreya looked gorgeous[if i was a guy..hhmmm....]pritam looked neat and so did kunal...
wrong info guys, they didnt show the russian dancers[ if someone was looking forward to their presence...sorry]

well, started with sukhwinder singh and the kids rendering chak de india...[y did they show a visual of the cricket team??]

vyom dressed as bhagat singh sang kar chale hum fida..a good effort, but i cud hear only rafi saabs voice in my ears...

prakriti as mother teresa with jaha daal daal par sone ki chidiya...was flat, the emotion of the song didnt come thru at all..the judges gave her atiuttam[ look forward to a surge of sms propelling her to the top]

areeb as chandra shekhar azad...with mera rang de basanti chola was practically flawless, inspite forgetting the lyrics, picked up beautifully...pritam said, after hearing u today, i am glad we saved u from being eliminated..

a spontaneous saare jahan se accha from shreya..was touching...

they announced a challenger will b joining in another 2 weeks, so i guess the idea of a wild card entry is abandoned..

anwesha as indira gandhi..sang zindagi maut na ban jaaye...beautiful...she forgot the lyrics and cudnt pick up...[wen asked y.she said bcoz areeb forgot, i did too...silly excuse]...eventually...she did finish the song..sarvottam from the judges...

the kids and pritam sang to his own composition on vande maataram[i think it was his own]..correct me if i am wrong..!!

soniya as jhansi laxmi bai..sang yeh mera india..she was brilliant in parts, flat in others...but, that kids got a very very powerful voice...
both her parents came on the sets and it was very emotional...it must b tough on a kid of 9[or whatever her age is...as ppl point out]..to b alone and perform for 3 months under pressure..hats off to this kid..

aishwarya as mother india..sang ae mere watan ke logon...like shreya said this song sung by anyone will bring tears to ones eyes...a pretty good rendition...

sukhwinder ended the show with yeh hindustaan hai

videos worth waiting for....

cheers..

or did i get it wrong??abt anwesha??she wanted the musicians to go slower in case she forgot the lyrics??i am not too sure what happened..but what i wrote above is what i figured out happened..

Kalyani said...

i think its a bit tough on the kids to record for 2 days episodes back to back on a single day...must b a lot of pressure... its perfectly fine if forget lyrics i guess...the kids are definitely under pressure, its showing now...esp anwesha, areeb soniya and prakriti...

Goofy,
Hold on bro!
You're just going on and on as if Anwesha sang besura or flat. She was singing a very difficult song that is sung by three singers and one of them is Ashaji! I agree that she was not impressive by her high standards of performance but she was still heads and shoulders above the rest (minus Aish)
:)
Also, did you say that Soniya was flawless? Now I know that I have been tagged on this blog as someone who does not like Soniya (not true, not true at all) but she sings as if she has a train to catch or someone is running her songs in fast forward. She did it again, yesterday. So I would be very careful using the word 'flawless' for her :)
Kalyani ji, aapke post par mera jawab thodi hee der mein :)

Nice start of the show with sukhwinder singh's Chak De India

Abhas says today is 58th Republic day, whereas it should be 59th. It shows how we feel about the country. Do you think just by celebratiing one day for republic day or independence day and talking big, fulfill our responsibilities towards the country!!

Vyom sang Kar Chale Hum Fida not so well. Power was lacking, but then also he managed 2 sarvottam.

Prakriti sang Jahan Daal Daal Par as per my expectation. Average performace. Though managed just atiuttam from judges, but dont worry, she will get highest no of votes next week.

Abhas also made ask the people of north east to vote for Prakriti. If someone's eye size are small, it does not mean they belong to north east. DARJEELING IS IN WEST BENGAL. How disgusting. 2nd mistake in a day. I dont know who writes the scripts for SVOI. You dont the history of the country, you dont know the geography of the country and you are selecting VOICE OF INDIA. Shame on you. Change the name of the program. They should the name to AMUL VOICE OF STAR PLUS.

Areeb sang Mera Rang De Basanti Chola quite ok. though he forgot the lyrics, then also he manage 2 sarvottam.

Shreya sang Sare Jahan Se Achcha quite beautifully.

Anwesha sang the song Zindagi Maut na ban Jaye quite beautifully. Its quite a tough song. She got stuck up in the middle. Could not adjust pace with dholak. But then also finshes well (i think she forgot lyrics in between). I dont know when she will take easy & finish it master stroke. she always choose tough song. this song from sarfarosh was sang by 2 male singers (Sonu n roop k rathode).
I think almost all of her songs are duet only. Just look around baby, everyone chooses simple song n gets highest votes.

Soniya sang Ye Duniya ek dulhan not upto my expectation. some of the nodes were really good. It was a happy song, she made it quite sad one. After Jayant, soniya is Ghajji's sympathy card. Soniya was asked to recite her letter (written to her father). You should listen to the letter. I hope it was written by a 9(!!!) year old. her parents presence in the show, made the show more emotional. Personally I feel good that at last her parents could attend the show.

Aishwarya sang aye mere wata ke logo quite well. I expect better performance from her.

Thanks Goofy for the links....I watched the episode before Kalyani woke up. :). This blog really rocks!!! Three Cheers to Kalyani, Antar and Rishi!!!

Really liked the show today. Wow what a weekend. I just wait for the weekend just to see this show. As Kalyani said...I am impresssed with the judges today...good dress code...

As usual i liked anwesha's rendition though she forgot her lines... i felt that the music was going abit fast and she was trying to catch up with them...poor thing!

Really felt happy for Soniya...though her performance wasn't the best....it was a happy moment for her...she is hardly 9 yrs so i am sure she'll definitely come up some day with little bit of practice and guidance....i kinda like her...she is a smart confident and talented kid...

Areeb's performace was good...Aish did good but didnt like her performance in yesterdays episode at all...after Alkaji's gold chain episode and Adnan simply praising her for a mediocre performance i feel she is not all that good to be hyped up so much. I am surprised that Anwesha doesn't get gold chain or praises other than the sarvottams from Shreya, Pritam and Kunal. But she is the best. She is too good.

Amit,
Thank God that someone else also thinks the way I do. I have literally been banned on this blog to speak my mind about Soniya (even if its good). Goofy nay to supari hee nikal dee merey naam ki!!!!
:)
Anyways, if today's episode leaves any doubts in anyone's mind that participants would play any card to get votes, I think people just don't wanna see the obvious.
Anwesha sang immaculately. The dholak was too loud, her voice was just getting killed under that 'thap' compounded by the fact that this song needed a male baritone to sound above the 'thap'.
Did you guys notice her variations. She just kills me with them. She will always add a little bit of her own little murkis to the song which make the song even better to hear.
She also has problem with hindi and thus is not able to express herself very well. What she wanted to say was that 'Areeb mujh say pehle lyrics bhool gaya thha isiliye merey mann mein woh khayal aaya ki kahin main bhi na bhool jaoon and that made me nervous'. Poor thing, she's so soft spoken and least of all has NO drama associated to her which makes me respect her even more!
My wife always says that she is a perfectionist and she is right. It shows in her performances. After singing such a difficult Sonu-Roop Kumar song so well, she came down really hard on herself for the break in between! (The reason I mention Sonu's name cause his songs are really really difficult to sing. Just like Rafi saab's...)

God bless her soul!
I have maxed out my votes for her from two different accounts from two different computers. Lekin merey chalis voton say kya honey waala hai, bhai log sabhi vota karo Anwesha kay liye!!

beautifully expressed abt anwesha,i agree with u...i did mention i wasnt too sure what she said, thanks for correcting me...betn u r love for soniya and goofys for areeb...i sometimes feel whether i am blind abt their talent??lol
for me the top 5..will always b anwesha, aishwarya, soniya, areeb and gitasri....anweshas sooooooo perfect..she over shadows everyone else...thats her khubiyat...[did i use the right word??]!!
my daughter last nite came and told me with a straight face.anwesha will b eliminated next...i was horrified, bcoz she said the same abt toshi...ufff...woh bacchi bhi, na..
cheers...

i admit anwesha n aish are more deserving but hey ! remember there are other contestants aswell.
ppl are votin who they thinks should win..n if u really like anwesha that much .than just stop yur crap here n start voting like other ppl votes for prakriti.

I love Prakriti performance in Tinka Tinka. It was quite rocking. Few of her other performance were also quite OK. She has a very good voice, but yet to be matured one. Is she is ready for all type of songs. Just watch her performing in Dil Cheez Kya hai
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-759480228086337415&q=prakriti&total=74&start=10&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

Do u think she sang better than Aish/Soniya? She is definitely better than Areeb/Vyom. I dare not to compare her with Anwesha. Otherwise people will beat me.

If I assign marks for saturday perfomance as follows.
Sarvottam- 3 points
Atiuttam- 2 points
Uttam- 1 Point
Madhyam- 0 point

Then the total point secured by the top 4 out of 72 are (not considering beyond sarvottam, sarvottam sarvottam sarvottam, super sarvottam, etc)

Anwesha-72 points (max point-all sarvottam till now)
Aishwarya-71 points
Soniya-63 points
Prakriti-56 points

Talent wise it will tough for Prakriti to match the top 3. But votewise she will kill anyone.

In this blog, all the supporter of anwesha/ aish/ soniya have accepted the fate that Prakriti will win the title. So congratulation in advance for winning the title.

In this blog we discuss about talent only. whosoever performs well will be appreciated.

Hard said...

Chelseaa,
Nice try! but not on this blog. Take your insecurities somewhere else, I'm sure you will find a lot of takers on the web. This blog talks about pure talent ONLY and I'm sorry to say that Prakriti still needs some time before she becomes the favorite on this blog. I can go ahead and say that we all unanimously feel that these two girls are the best two talents that have emerged from any singing reality show in a long long time!
So yeah, Prakriti will have to wait before she can be a worthy opponent, however, she can give any one a run for their money when it comes to voting power.
Chelsea, I will tell you one more thing. You should pray that Prakriti does not come in scary land or else the judges will eliminate her without even batting an eyelid!
Have fun and congratulations on Prakriti's triumph in Chhote Ustaad!!! (its a prediction)

Is this blog supports you to create a differnt section for having interesting facts about Indian music, musicians, singers etc. Bloggers over here provides lots of information abt music. if it is held in any particular week blogging, it may remain unnotcied by others.

You 3 will have the Rights of addition, modification or deletion in that section.

Hard has provided such a beautiful list of songs few weeks back, that I have compiled a CD out of those song.

I am also inpired by him and working on to prepare a list of hit song of 1950s. Hope u people like it.

Quick question to bloggers. Which film according to you guys is SD Burman's best effort?
I know its not that easy to identify one movie from such a big group but I think there is one piece that stands out both due to music and lyrics.
Which one?

u hve put one difficult question regarding the best one of SDBurman
Shall i say it is TUM NA JAANE KIS JAHAAN....FROM SAZA! I AM NOT SURE. THERE ARE MANY BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST

mohankristo said...

IT MUST BE EITHER SAZA OR ARADHANA

Hard said...

Mohan bhai,
I said Best Movie score and NOT best song. I know that its not an easy task isolating either of them but given some thought, I think its possible :)
Also, the answer is NOT absolute, it varies from person to person. Its who YOU think is his best score!
Here're some things you should take into consideration. Lyrics, Rendition and last but no the least, the role of music in elevating the overall quality of the movie.
I will analyze this later tonight...stay tuned :)

Hard said...

Not a lot of people are aware but Aradhana was RD burman!!!!!
It is credited to SD but it was RD who gave all the music as SD was very very sick!
That was the movie and year when RD decided to go solo, completely!

amit said...

For me its a tie between Aradhana n Abhimaan.

Though other movie like paying guest, guide, jewel thief, kala bazar are not that far behind

its really tough to select the best of the lot.

de".

Aradhana will get my vote, as it played significant role in shapping the career of some gr8 personalities like Kishore Kumar, R D Burman, Anand Bakshi, Shakti Samanta. RD was associate music director. For the song "Mere Sapno ki raani", RD play the mouth organ. this film was responsible in Kishore Kumar's second coming and went on to make him the top male playback singer of Hindi Films.

I agree wid Nikkie.why doesn't anvesha get a gold chain or something?she never gets below a sarvottam, even if she 4gets.ash has got attiuttam many times. Its so silly n i don't like ash much either way.she is claerly gajji's choice though(wonder why?)

Prakriti is not a bad singer-she has a sweet voice which is a bit raw.But she has miles 2 go.I guess gitasri was much better den her.had a gr8 voice quality-dat girl.better den ash's voice quality.Again I repeat ash n alka yagnik have a similar voice quality somewhere. There r nasal overtones, but not directly nasal like HR of course!!It is a bit of a fake, falsetto quality.
I think gajji wants her 2 b eliminated as fast as psb.dis challenger thing is just 2 raise TRPs.Wot was need 4 it?

Hard said...

Goofy, (really long post alert)
Thanks for taking the time out to pen your thoughts. I saw the list and songs that you had posted, they are all immortals. Rafi saab and Dada burman unleashing their magic to create some timeless classics!
The question I had asked was to do with the best overall score and that's why even though a lot of movies that you had suggested are in the list of top SD movies, some of them have a few brilliant songs and really the entire score does not meet the brilliance of the few songs, movies like Tere Ghar ke samne and Paying Guest etc.
If we narrow down the list to movies where all the songs are equally good, we have a list of following films:

Chupke Chupke (1975)
Mili (1975)
Abhimaan (1973)
Tere Mere Sapne (1971)
Sharmeelee (1971)
Prem Pujari (1970)
Aradhana (1969)
Jewel Thief (1967)
Guide (1965)
Bandini (1963)
Kala Bazar (1960)
Sujata (1959)
Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)
Pyaasa (1957)
Even Kaagaz ke phool does not appear in this list as Dekhi Zamane ki yaari and Waqt ne kiya find no other parallel amongst the rest.
Looking further closely purely on the quality of the score, following films stand out from the rest based on the rules I had laid down for the selection.

Mili (1975)
Abhimaan (1973)
Prem Pujari (1970)
Aradhana (1969)
Guide (1965)
Bandini (1963)
Kala Bazar (1960)
Sujata (1959)
Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)
Pyaasa (1957)
Its surprising that I have arrived at a list of 10 movies! :)
Now you did bring another twist to the entire discussion by adding a classification based on the mood of the songs. If we take that criteria into consideration we have two extremes in Pyaasa (Sad) and Chalti ka naam gaadi (CKNG) (Happy, almost silly).
The fact that a musician can offer a range which includes both these soundtracks speaks volumes of Burman da's talent!!!
So coming back to the list...one could easily pick any movie from the list mentioned above with classics like
Badi sooni sooni hai (Mili)
Maine kaha phoolon say (Mili)
Phoolon kay rang say (Prem Pujari)
Aaj phir jeeney ki tamanna hai (Guide)
Sach hue sapne terey (Kala Bazaar)
Rangeela Re (prem Pujari)
Teri Bindiya Re (Abhimaan)
Ab ke baras bhej bhiiyako baabul (Bandini)
Tere saajan hai us paar (Bandini)
Paanch rupaiyya barah aana (CKNG)
but for me none of these come close to the compositions and lyrics of Pyaasa!
Saahir and SD created a masterpiece which although is sad in its undertones but hides a gem in Hum aap ki aankhon mein or has Geeta Dutt crooning Jaane kya mianey kahi and then finally one of the innumerable Rafi classics filmed on Johnny Walker Sar jo tera chakraye
Pyaasa defines SD as a music director just as much as it defines Guru Dutt as a filmaker and Sahir as a lyricist (shaayar).
Note these lyrics:
ye kuuche, ye niilaam ghar dilakashii ke
ye luTate hue kaaravaa.n zi.ndagii ke
kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n muhAfiz khudii ke
jinhe.n naaz hai hind par vo kahaa.n hai.n
kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n
Tell me how many times a soundtrack makes you go moist in the corner of your eye? Pyaasa holds that power over me. Everytime I listen to Rafi saab's unmatched renditions of Saahir's heart tugging poetry, I cry both with joy and sorrow.
As Guru Dutt says in the film (lyris by Saahir)
Hum ghamzadaa hai laayein kahaan say hum khushi kay geet
Dengey wahi jo payengey is zindagi say hum!

I have been a silent reader of this blog and have seen excellent analysis from fellow bloggers here..

I am not sure how often I will get to write here, but this week I have some time... Like many of you, all my votes go to Anwesha in the show... Such is her talent that she makes a singer of Aishwarya's calibre pale out... I also think that Soniya is the dark horse of this contest... Very powerful singing, and in her genre - she can be flawless...

Coming over to the episodes this week.. I found the Friday episode to be one of the weakest in recent times.. perhaps it had to do with the theme.. Given a theme like Tapori, you will have the weakest compositions being rendered and thats what precisely happened! Sad to see Jayant go out.. He was a top 5 singer for me along with Vyom and the 3 girls already mentioned...

Saturday saw some fantastic singing.. Only Anwesha could have selected to sing 'Zindagi Maut na Ban Jaaye' and she does it so well.. God bless this child! I personally loved Vyom's and Areeb's performance too.. Very heartfelt, I must say... Aishwarya's song has been beaten to death in the reality shows, and hence you always tend to find something lacking in its rendition whoever sings it! Soniya was weaker compared to other days... Prakriti was as mediocre as ever!

With Soniya desplacing Prakriti from top slot this time, and judges giving her a 'atiuttam' (which I thought was more).. I am sure that she will bounce back to the top spot next week again! She is a sureshot finalist and perhaps the winner of the show...

But as someone rightly pointed out, me too would perhaps be fine seeing Anwesha in the 2nd or the 3rd spit and hence not get bound by the stupid contracts of the channel.. That will see her singing career florish more... I am sure, by this time.. The Rehmans and the Moitras and the Bhansalis would have already taken a note of this wonderchild!

As for the discussion on what can be stated as RDB's best... its a very tough one... and I would first narrow down it to top 5 for me that will include:

Abhimaan (1973)
Guide (1965)
Bandini (1963)
Sujata (1959)
Pyaasa (1957)

I did not include Mili just because it had too few songs anyways... Of this, if I just had to name one - I would go with Guide... For its sheer variety in the album, the best possible use of accompanying orchestra and some of the best Lata Mangeshkar and Md. Rafi songs ever featuring in this one.. To me, 'Guide' is almost like signature Sachin Dev Burman

ok guys,we got the time to work something out..as the major idea for this is u r s, we wud like some more input..b4 we open a new page and link it to the main page...

we wud prefer songs ranging from the 40s to the 90s...

now, u guys can tell us..all the categories u want...shd it b yr wise, decade wise, composers, lyricists, singers,..duets, etc...

once the categories are approved...we will add it to the page and ppl can start compiling their list..and post it in the usual thread...then the admins will take a final decision...u guys can approve the final list[i guess] and we post it in the new page..

we wud like to give credit to all the bloggers, but whether it will b feasible for each song..dunno..is it ok to credit u guys under a single header??

if ppl put in their ideas in a couple of days........we can start the work and put everything in place by the weekend....or early next week...

final decision of including any song or the list lies with the administrators which will b broadly based on consensus...

of course, HARD its a request u put in u r name or just a name..we wud not like to list adjectives next to ppls names...lol

cheers...

I think one of the episodes should feature children singing English songs.

My favourite English numbers are:

1) Another day in Paradise - Phil Collins.
2) Everything I do, I do it for you- Bryan adams
3) Jesus to a child - george Michael
4) Freedom - george Michael
5) Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams
6) Have you ever really loved a woman - Bryan Adams
7) Frozen - By Madonna

Feels like Kalyani and Amit have not yet made up their minds on the best Burman Da score!
Kalyani, will it take for me to add an adjective to the end of your name to extract a response? :)

Goofy and Joyce,
The reason I opened up the floor for everyone to mention their fav. Burman Da score was exactly to create a variety amongst the choices. My pick is Pyaasa cause I am a firm believer of poetry driving the quality of music (in hindi cinema) RD used to always say that his music was just as good as Gulzar's words and hence if you try and isolate the best songs, they will be augmented by some great writing too. One of the reasons that the 80s era was so so bad was due to the fact that we had very bad songwriting. Infact that was the time when tunes were created first and then words were written based on the tunes!!!
Guide's poetry had the power of simplicity. Something that was a trademark of Shailendra, however its too simplistic for me and hence Pyaasa ends up a notch higher in my opinion.
We should have a discussion, someday, on the best lyricist in hindi cinema!

Not all songs of Aradhana were composed by RD. Dada Burman had fallen ill during the making of Aradhna's music and RD completed the songs.
RD composed the following songs (for sure)
Roop tera mastana
Mere sapnon ki raani
Kora kagaz thha yeh man mera
There's no comparison between RD and SD. Both were stalwarts in their own right. I salute them for the richness they added to hindi music.

@hard

If u dont give credit to SD for Aradhana, then my choice of SD movie will be Abhimaan.

I love almost all the songs from abhimaan
Tere Mere Milan Ki
Nadiya Kinare
Piya Bina Piya Bina
Ab To Hai Tum Se
Meet Na Mila Re Man Ka
Loote Koi Man Ka Nagar
Teri Bindiya Re

This movie depicts the human emotion very nicely. esp the husband wife relationship. It show how pride & jealousy tear the marriage apart. Very natural acting by jaya.

I cant comment much abt Pyaasa, as I have watched it long back. Regarding songs, i loved 3 of them only
Hum Aap Ki Aankhon Mein
Jane Woh Kaise Log The
Sar Jo Tera Chakaraye

so i prefer abhimaan than pyaasa

Just listen to the lyrics closely and then tell me if anything compares to this wonderful piece of film score!

Kalyani,
Here's what I think could be be a possible set of categories. Starting from 50s, we should list 20 best songs in the following sub-categories for each decade, upto 2008.
1. Male Solo
2. Female Solo
3. Duets
4. Qawwalis
5. Devotional
6. Patriotic.

That would make it 120 songs per decade. Sounds good?
Kalyani, you're one hard task master man, I'm glad you're NOT my boss!
:)

@hard, kalyani

dont you think it wont be possible to get 20 good qawwalis/devotional/patriotic each in a particular decade. But we may find around 40 good duets (even more) song in a decade.

male solo -20
female solo-20
duet-30-50
qawwalis-10
devotional-10
patriotic-10
(it really tough to segregate. Hard suggestion for 20 each is also pretty good)
we can have 100-120 songs

@Hard - Pyaasa would certainly feature in my top 5 overall lyrics ever for sure... but as for as Burman Da's compositions, I have found more soul and variation in Guide and Abhimaan.. Even Sujata..

As for who should be the best lyricist - well for me, its a contest between Sahir Ludhianvi and Gulzar... :)

Bingo!
This blog needs more discerning voices such as yours. Undoubtedly the two gems of film poetry writing!
